Importance of Pizza Size

One of the iconic meals that came from Italy would probably be pizza. Just thinking about that delicious crust, variety of toppings, and the thickness of the flattened dough served hot in front of you will surely bring wonders to your craving tummies.

Before making pizza or ordering pizza, you should first think about how many people and the age of each person will be eating it.

This will decide the number of slices, the number of pizzas, and the pizza size.

Age is an important factor because, like kids who get distracted almost constantly, sometimes they will not even take a seat to eat their pizzas. If they do, monitor them so they won’t overeat pizza slices. You can have it sliced in tiny sizes if this is the case.

A tiny one would also probably serve one or two people, but it won’t feed a crowd if you had a pizza party. If you don’t know how many people you’ll serve, you’ll need to know how big a large pizza is and how many people it can feed.

How to Calculate the Size of a Pizza

To calculate the size of a pizza, you need to find the diameter. To find the diameter of a pizza:

  1. Place the tape measure’s end over one of the pizza crust’s edges.
  2. Keep the tape measure hovering above the surface as you move to the opposite edge of the pizza.
  3. At the place where the tape measure hits the crust’s edge, read the notation on the tape measure.

How is Pizza Size Measured?

Pizzas are sized by their diameter; therefore, a pizza with a 10-inch diameter is considered Personal, a 12-inch diameter is considered Small, a 14-inch diameter is considered Medium, a 16-inch diameter is considered Large, and finally, an 18-inch pizza is considered Extra-Large.

Check the below pizza sizes in inches and pizza size in cm.

What are Standard Pizza Sizes?

Because of its popularity, pizza sizing is very familiar to most people. It is a huge factor when deciding how many pizzas to order. Different sizes can also mean different slices.

Let’s break pizza sizes down, ranging from the smallest pie to the extra-large pizzas.

  • Personal – 10″; (78.5.4 sq. in.)
  • Small – 12″; (113.09 sq. in.)

Is it Better to Get Two Medium Pizzas or One Large Pizza?

According to mathematicians, ordering one Large pizza is preferable to ordering two Medium pizzas. Surprisingly, one 18-inch pizza has more “pizza” per slice, mathematically defined as “area,” than two 12-inch pizzas. Check it out.

What’s Bigger, One 18-inch Pizza or Two 12-inch Pizzas?

You will note the following if you refer to the above pizza size chart. The area of two 12-inch pizzas is equal to 226 square inches. While the 18-inch pie is 254 square inches of pizza.

What are the Standard Pizza Sizes?

Slice to Pizza Size Ratio

  • 8″ to 10″ pizza is the smallest serving of them all, with 4 pie-shaped cuts, which is only enough for one serving
  • 10″ to 12″ Small size pizza has the usual cut of 6 to 8 pie-shaped pieces that fit two persons to feed
  • 14″ Medium size pizza serves about 3 to 4 people in 8 slices
  • 16″ Large-sized pizza can be cut differently into 16 pieces of square cuts appropriately for 3 to 5 people. You can still order the traditional pizza slicing in this size, usually in 8 to 10 pieces per box.
  • 16″ to 18″ Extra-large pizza’s usual cut is for 5 to 6 people sharing 12 pizza cuts. You can also request to cut it into 24 squares if you want to.
  • 20″ Jumbo pizza can be cut into 10-14 pie pieces and 36 slices in squares, suitable for 6 to 8 people.

Pizza sizes and slices may also differ in different food chains and restaurants. Upon ordering, you can request the seller for a specific number of cuts that will accommodate your group or order an uncut one so you can do it yourself. Check out our pizza size chart below.

Benefits of Pizza Sizes

Most people arguably say that ordering a large pizza is a better deal because of its cost-effectiveness than the smaller and medium-sized ones. But each size comes with different benefits, which we will list as follows:

  • A personal 10″ pizza can provide 4 slices. It will be more than enough for one person already.
  • A small-sized 12″ pizza can provide 4- 5 slices. It will be more than enough for one to two people.
  • A medium-sized 14″ pizza is perfect if you accompany it with another snack that serves about 8 slices to 3-4 people; however, if you are hungry and want to make pizza your main meal, a medium-sized one might not be enough.
  • If you want to go all out, choose a large-sized pizza of 16 inches that can cater to everybody’s craving needs. Some stores offer these sizes of pizza with great deals.

Tips For Choosing the Right Pizza Size

  1. Consider the Occasion

Whether it is served on a hot summer day, a rainy day, or a chilly day, pizza just fits all types of days. It also goes well with any occasion, such as a birthday party, an impromptu get-together, a beach party, a picnic date, or even comfort food when breaking up.

Here are some popular occasions to celebrate pizza:

  • An important match or game
  • Graduation parties
  • Family or friend get-together
  • Moving into a new house
  • Thanksgiving
  • New Year and Christmas Eve
  • Halloween Parties
  • National Pizza Day, which annually happens on February 9

Considering the occasion would also help you decide how many pizzas to order or make. Of course, the menu for a pizza party is mostly pizza, meaning you should order more.

However, if the event has other foods besides pizza, it would probably be an appetizer or snack for the guests, which means you’ll need to order less.

  1. Don’t Underestimate Appetites

As one of the favorite snacks worldwide, it is a good idea to take notice of everyone’s appetite. You should consider the type of pizza your guests or family members would want because not everyone agrees, especially with pizza toppings.

You can also check if they had eaten beforehand to know how large their appetite would be. To give you a better idea and be on the safer side, multiply the number of adults by three and kids by two.

Then, buy a pizza that sums up both results. If you are concerned about leftover pizzas, you can encourage them to take some of them home.

  1. Group Taste

There are times when people’s tastes just don’t match everyone else. Maybe most of the group likes pineapple on top of their pizza, so you’ll order more and a larger size of Hawaiian Pizza.

It could also be that one person eats vegetables only while the other prefers meat toppings on their pizza.

  1. Ingredients and Pizza Type

If you are concerned with the cost of pizza, you must know that the larger, the more expensive it is. You can also buy a pizza with lots of toppings or a healthier variety which is costly.

If possible, avoid buying frozen pizzas. Some people prefer fresher bakes over those in storage for months. If you disagree, chances are your pizza will remain uneaten.

  1. Allergies and Diet Requirements

Despite being one of the world’s favorite snacks, pizza, after all, is junk food with many calories, from dough to its toppings. Knowing your group’s diet restrictions is essential to avoid making mistakes when ordering. Pizza stores now offer gluten-free versions or any customization you want with your pizza.

  1. Consider Leftovers Asked by Guests.

When placing an order, you may ask your guests whether they want a take-home pizza or not. You can include this upon considering the pizza size. It could be smaller, but they can take it home with many slices or large cut pieces.
