On the other hand, if you insert a pizza into the oven with layers upon layers of meat and thick vegetables, the center of the pizza is going to come out cold and doughy. That’s not the kind of pizza you want.

  • When adding toppings to a pizza, always keep in mind that the toppings add weight and moisture to the dough.
  • The toppings should not be more than three at a time.  If adding more than three, add less of each.
  • Vegetables should be pre-cooked prior to adding them to the pizza, and an additional minute or two should be added to the cooking time.

Most baking recipes will usually require the oven to be anywhere between 275°F and 350°F, but what about pizza?

While there is going to be some variation between different pizza types and the ovens that you use, the average range of temperatures you should be aiming for is going to be between 450°F and 500°F.

What’s the temperature of a commercial pizza oven?

If you think that’s a lot, consider that commercial pizza ovens will usually range between 700°F and 800°F!

The right temperature is an essential element of pizza, but timing is what matters the most.

The temperature has to be hot enough to completely melt the cheese and for the crust to be well-cooked, but if you leave the pizza in the oven for too long or too little, you aren’t going to enjoy it.

Let’s start with something that we all do. There will come a time when you want to cook a homemade pizza in your standard oven.

Of course, when you cook a homemade pizza, I don’t have a box telling you the temperature or cooking time, so it can be a little intimidating to try and guess how long the pizza is going to take. 

You might go off the temperature on the boxes of frozen pizzas at the grocery store, but if you want to get specific about your pizza, you will have to go a bit hotter than that.

The best temperature to cook pizza is as high as your oven will go. With a standard oven, the kind that you could buy at a home improvement store, your maximum temperature will probably be around 500°F or 550°F, this is entirely safe.

If you are one of the few people who have a commercial-grade oven in your own home, this may not apply.

Considering that brick ovens and commercial-grade pizza ovens can easily reach 800°F.

Difference in Cooking Time per Pizza Styles

As you know, pizza started in Naples with the traditional Neapolitan Pizza.  After the Italians emigrated to the United States, a whole array of pizza styles were, and are still being developed, all based on the Neapolitan Style.

So, if you are starting your pizza-making journey, and don’t have the required time or think that making pizza at home is difficult, it is okay for you to look for alternatives. 

Pizza can still be quite enjoyable when you choose to buy them in their frozen variants; you just have to know the best way to properly cook them, and that is where we come in. 

How to Bake Frozen Pizza

Most certainly, when you purchase a frozen pizza, it will have cooking instructions on the back of the box.

If you don’t have the pizza box available, the best temperature to cook frozen pizza is at 450°F for around 10 to 15 minutes.

While this can certainly produce a pizza you would be happy to eat alongside a glass of wine; if you want to step up your pizza game, you can entirely forgo the instructions on the pizza box.

Additionally, you will want to begin thawing the pizza out, perhaps as you wait for the oven to reach the right temperature.

Cooking a frozen pizza isn’t too different from cooking a homemade pizza aside from the fact that someone else did all the work of putting the pizza together.

Once the pizza is out of the box and beginning to thaw, you will want to turn your oven up as high as it will go.

The goal of this is to try and mimic the same environment that a commercial-grade pizza oven or a brick oven can reach. For most standard ovens, the maximum temperature ranges between 500°F and 550°F.

From experience,  reheating pizza can be troublesome. Sometimes the slices of pizza get too soggy to enjoy, and other times the pizza will get too dry and brittle to savor.

When reheating a pizza, you will not follow the traditional method of turning the oven up as hot as possible. The pizza has already been thoroughly cooked the way you want it.

This time, the goal is to bring it up to a tasty temperature without altering how it feels.

Instead of turning the oven up to 500°F, to reheat your pizza, you will want to set the temperature between 350°F and 375°F as your cooking range.

You should always make sure to let the oven fully pre-heat before inserting the pizza into the oven; otherwise, the texture will be ruined.

To reheat leftover pizza preheat the oven temperature between 350°F and 375°F and set it for 8 to 10 minutes.

Before the oven has reached the temperature that you need it to be at, you will want to place a piece of foil directly on the rack in the oven. If you wish, you can also line a baking tray with foil and use that.

The goal is to get the foil (or baking tray) as hot as the oven before you set the pizza in. Once the foil has reached the right temperature, you will want to put the pizza in the oven and wait. Typically, this should take somewhere between 8 to 10 minutes.

However, you do not know exactly when everyone will arrive at the party, so you cannot plan to take the pizza out at a specific time.

Instead, you are tasked with keeping the pizza warm. We know from experience that trying to keep food warm in the oven is a bit of a balancing act.

If the temperature is too high for too long, I’ll overcook the toppings of the pizza. leaving the center cold.

So by now, you already know a variety of ways to cook pizza in an oven. But, what about going outdoors and cooking a pizza on the grill?
