Ooni Pro vs Roccbox: Battle Royale. Find Which One Will Make You the Conqueror

Ooni Pro vs Roccbox – Meet the two contestants.

Comparing the Ooni Pro, the industry leader, to single-burner ovens such as the Koda 16 would be unfair, so we are matching it up against one of the only models that can meet the challenge, the Roccbox.

This comparison of the Roccbox and Ooni Pro will get you in the mood for pizza – but which pizza oven is perfect for you?

Let’s find out!

Ooni vs. Roccbox

Who’s Who?

Let’s start with the first contender.

Ooni

When you think of scintillating Neapolitan pizzas, Edinburgh probably isn’t the first place that pops into your mind. However, in this case, Edinburgh may as well be Naples North because it’s home to Ooni, the company that’s getting its pizza ovens mentioned all over the Internet.

Ooni

Ooni was formed in 2012; the company is headed by the husband and wife duo of Kristian Tapaninaho, a Finnish native, and Darina Garland. They founded the company to make portable, affordable wood-fired pizza ovens available for everyday people.

Ooni Pizza Ovens Logo

It’s a dream that was funded by everyday people as well. Like so many passion projects today, Ooni owes its existence to a Kickstarter campaign that began in 2012 while the company went under the name “Uuni,” which means “oven” in Finnish.

Still, as Juliet so famously said, “What’s in a name? A fire-baked Neapolitan pizza by any other name would smell as mouth-wateringly fresh!” (Or something like that.)

Its various crowdfunding campaigns were incredibly successful, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for multiple projects, including raising more than £500,000 over five weeks in 2017.

It’s been an award-winning success story since then, with Ooni taking home the Retailers’ Choice Award at Glee Birmingham 2015.

Ooni has been able to release several models and has grown to have an international staff and consumer base.

Gozney – Roccbox

Roccbox, interestingly enough, also hails from the UK, with its origins tracing back to Birmingham, and was also the product of a crowdfunding campaign.

Gozney

The company was created by Gozney Group in 2010, headed by Tom Gozney, and is currently based in Christchurch in the UK.

The company has supplied high-end pizza ovens to hotel chains and restaurants and now offers domestic use options.

From the time of their initial funding via Indiegogo and a grant from Virgin’s Pitch to Rich, Gozney’s first flagship oven took four years to develop, and they’ve remained a presence in the pizza oven industry since.

What to Consider When Buying a Portable Pizza Oven

With each oven’s details in mind, let’s take a step back now and consider how these features stack up in context. After all, big numbers and claims may be eye-catching, but what makes a difference in finding the right pizza oven for you?

Design

Both the Ooni Pro and Roccbox feature distinctive designs. When choosing from different pizza oven designs, aesthetics are an inevitable consideration.

Whether you’re looking for a sleek and portable oven or one on the bigger side, you’ll probably want the oven to look good. After all, whatever the model, size, capability, or price, a pizza oven will always represent a significant investment, and you aren’t want to spend all that money just to get an eyesore.

Simultaneously, all kitchen and cookware appliances must strike a balance between form and function, and pizza ovens are no different. A pretty-looking pizza oven that can’t heat up properly or doesn’t have much room for pizza-making isn’t worth the money.

Some ovens have specific setups that can make it easier or harder for a pizza to be properly rotated so it doesn’t cook unevenly.

You’ll, thus, want to look for pizza ovens that combine sleek designs with design features that can improve performance, such as easy-to-use ovens, cooking capacity, how portable it is, and so on.

Assembly

You aren’t want to deal with a pizza oven that’s a hassle to assemble. That’s especially true if you’re a newcomer to the world of pizza oven cooking, as many of Gozney Group and Ooni’s customers are likely to be.

While they sometimes target commercial buyers in hotels and restaurants, some of the appeals of ovens like these is that they are designed for and by pizza lovers outside of the corporate sphere.

Thus, these ovens’ target audience isn’t professionals or people who can or likely want to spend forever putting together a complex piece of machinery.

Size

This is an exciting category to consider since, in a way, it’s a matter of preference.

On the one hand, if you plan on taking your pizza oven on the road, you don’t want to schlep around a massive pizza oven. Chimneys can also make a pizza oven more cumbersome and harder to pack.

On the other hand, larger size means more pizza-baking capacity, and who doesn’t love that? One of the most significant selling points of the Ooni Pro is that it features a more extensive interior than many alternatives, thus allowing you to cook bigger pizzas.

You’ll, therefore, want to decide what you care more about, power and pizza size or portability, and then try to find an oven that strikes the best balance between the two for your wish list.

Fuel Source

The fuel sources used by your pizza oven can have a huge difference in not just their performance but how long the oven takes to clean, how expensive it is to maintain, and even the taste of your pizza.

For example, wood-fired and charcoal-burning ovens lend the pizzas baked using them a unique taste that is impossible to replicate via other cooking methods.

Gas-powered pizza ovens, on the other hand, burn a lot cleaner. As a result, they are straightforward to clean because they do not leave behind the same kind of black soot as wood- and charcoal-fired options.

What’s more, turning them off is as simple as the flick of a switch, whereas charcoal and wood-burning ovens require you not just to clean away debris but make sure there aren’t any smoldering embers lying around after the job’s done.

Pizza Size Versus Portability

As alluded to above, factors such as a chimney or having a beast of an oven regarding its overall size and weight can make it impossibly unportable.

On the other hand, an oven that’s too tiny will leave you with pizzas that feel more like appetizers than entrees, and you aren’t spending hundreds of dollars for that.

Price

Speaking of money, you want to find an oven that doesn’t break the bank yet doesn’t cheap out on the essential features mentioned above.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at what these ovens offer for their respective price tag.

Benefits of Owning Each Oven

Let’s start with the benefits of owning the Roccbox.

Roccbox

First and foremost, this is about as portable as you’re going to get for a Neapolitan pizza oven.

Forty-four pounds isn’t light, but it’s lighter than other models, including the Ooni Pro, and this, combined with the silicon cover and its slimmed-down chimney-free domed design, makes it relatively easy to pack into and unload from a car.

Also, this model can theoretically cook pizzas in a flash – just 90 seconds! It sounds too good to be true! In fairness, it somewhat is – conditions must be perfect for that cook time to come true, and they can take a lot longer.

That said, good things take time, and this model’s gas and wood-powered burners are excellent.

Best of all, this model can be used right out of the box. Simply plug it into the outlet, and you’re good to go.

How do the benefits of the Ooni Pro stack up against all that?
Incredibly well, in fact.

Here’s a video on how to use the Roccbox

Roccbox Pros and Cons

Let’s look at the pros and cons of the Roccobox.

Roccbox

ProsCons
Easy to transportBakes smaller pizzas
If everything goes perfectly, it cooks extremely quicklyRequires an add-on for wood burning
Good gas burners
Lightweight design
Low price at $500

Ooni Pro

For starters, the Ooni Pro can bake bigger pizzas than competing models, including the Roccbox.

A 16-inch pizza is huge and a big plus in this oven’s favor.

What’s more, while the Roccbox is more portable on paper, there are ways that this model can be made more easily transportable than it initially appears.

The slightly heavier weight and chimney may seem like a burden, but you can detach the chimney reasonably quickly, and once you do, the whole unit becomes that much lighter and easier to carry.

It still isn’t a walk in the park, but if you like the idea of cooking massive pizzas in the park for a family or company get-together, it’s hard to say no to the Ooni Pro.

This model’s design is also highly accessible, making it one of the most manageable units for those looking to cook this size’s pizzas.

What’s more, unlike the Roccbox, you can cook with not just wood and gas but charcoal, so if that’s your favorite method of cooking, then you have a clear winner in this model.

Finally, while both models can get up to roughly the same maximum temperature, there is more consistency on the Ooni Pro side. With the Roccbox, it may go faster, but only if you’re lucky enough for everything to go perfectly.

Here’s a video on how to use the Ooni Pro

Ooni Pro Pros and Cons

Let’s look at the pros and cons of the Roccobox.

Ooni Pro

ProsCons
Requires an add-on for wood burningIt is on the larger side
If everything goes perfectly, it cooks extremely quicklyIt can be harder to transport
It has a great pizza-baking capacity
Cooks relatively quickly
Lots of BTUs
Good value for the price at $600 and up

Who Should Get Each Oven?

Both ovens are recommendable.

If you are looking for a more portable model, you’ll want to side with the Roccbox. Its streamlined design and slightly lighter build make it the clear favorite in that regard.

On the other hand, if you care for more cooking space and power, you’ll probably want to go for the Ooni Pro. It also wins out among those looking for added burner options.

Overall Oven Tips for Each Oven

If you choose the Ooni Pro, you’ll want to check the instructional video on assembling it before you start. The Ooni pizza ovens aren’t complex models to set up, but this is a good idea to ensure that you don’t experience any unnecessary stress.

Watching these videos can also help you detach the chimney, making this model a bit more portable.

That may not seem like much of a difference given that it’s still 48.5 lbs, but when you detach part of that weight from the main body, the oven suddenly becomes a whole lot lighter. Also, disconnecting the chimney can allow you to fit this oven into your car.

You’ll also probably want to invest in that additional burner for gas. It is well worth switching between not one, not two, but three different ways of making pizzas.

There’s also a pellet-burning attachment available, so that are four ways of cooking and serving up Neapolitan goodness at your disposal.

You’ll also want to use those glass doors to your advantage to check on your pizza.
The thermometer on the Roccbox isn’t always the most reliable, so you may want to consider a replacement.

What to Watch Out for

As mentioned, the Roccbox has a smaller capacity than the Ooni Pro. If you don’t think that four inches is a big difference when it comes to pizza size, think again. You don’t want to make a large pizza only to find that you can’t fit it into the oven, and you don’t want to buy a unit only to be disappointed with its size.

On the other hand, you also don’t want to break your back trying to schlep an overly heavy unit. While there are ways of making the Ooni Pro lighter, you’ll want to watch out for lighting it too suddenly lest you hurt yourself.

The Winner

There is a lot to love about both of these ovens; it’s a shame that we have to pick a winner.

Operation–   Winner
Cleaning  Winner
Storage and Portability –  Winner
Price Winner   –

If all you want is a portable model, the Roccbox is an excellent choice, and you won’t be disappointed.

However, if you want the best overall model, the Ooni Pro remains the oven to beat. It offers a fantastic blend of raw power and capacity, is as sleek as ever, and can cook pizzas with up to four different fuel sources.

As long as you know how to take it apart and put it back together again, it can even be made somewhat portable. Pricewise, these extra features, capacity, and power make it a great value.

For Neapolitan pizzas done the right way, the Ooni pro is still the way to go.
