Ooni Koda 16 Review
Are you looking for an honest Ooni Koda 16 review?
Why is the Koda 16 our #1 recommended portable pizza oven?
If you’re a pizza lover (who isn’t), you have probably already heard all about this award-winning, fast-cooking, super-hot-burning backyard pizza oven and how trendy it has become in such a short amount of time.
The question is, does this gas-powered pizza oven live up to the hype?
Let’s take a look.
Ooni Koda 16 Review
As soon as we unboxed the Ooni Koda 16, it was clearly of superior quality. There is absolutely no setup required, and the instructions were straightforward.
It took a little time to perfect our pizza due to the size and extreme temperature, as we are used to making pizza in much larger pizza ovens.
The Ooni Koda 16 is a little heavy, weighing around 40lbs, but we didn’t struggle moving it around, and its compact size made it easy to store after use, although its sleek and versatile design isn’t at all an eyesore if you prefer to leave it out.
We were ready to roll once we mastered one of the recipes provided on the Ooni website.
We just had to unfold the legs and connect the hose to our propane tank, and thanks to the extreme heat and quick cook time, we had delicious pizza right from our backyard in about a minute.
But what exactly makes this oven different from the others?
As a gas-fueled oven with an easy-to-reach gas knob, you are able to control the heat intensity, whether you want to cook your pizza at 950°F or you want to lower it to cook other items. But keep reading for more on this.
About the Ooni Koda 16
Why You Should Trust Us
Hello, I’m Andrew the content manager here at homemadepizzapro.com.
Before I started writing articles, I worked for several years as a professional pizza baker in New York, so I’m familiar with all the ins and outs of making pizza – everything from the perfect dough to our own cheese. Now that I don’t commercially bake pizza for a living, I still love doing it in my spare time and will use any excuse to bake a pizza at home.
When starting research on this Ooni Koda 16, I read through guides and recommendations from Good Housekeeping, The Kitchn, Wirecutter, and Amazon. I also looked at threads on forums like Pizza Making, Reddit, and Quora.
I read hundreds of reviews and questions from pizza oven users.
I also interviewed three well-respected experts in the realm of pizza baking, all of whom have extensive experience with home pizza baking.
How We Researched Pizza Ovens
We asked 10+ of our readers how satisfied they are with their pizza ovens’ performance, reliability, and which features matter.
We read 100+ customer reviews across 10 pizza oven models for complaints and praise.
We spoke to several industry experts, including brand representatives and resellers.
For this particular Ooni Koda 16 review, we actually bought the Ooni Koda 16. It was not sponsored by Ooni or any other reseller and also visited the home of various of our readers who own this oven and had hands-on testing.

Ooni Koda 16 Features
The Ooni Koda 16 is gas-fueled and it does not work with any other type of fuel. You can use either propane or natural gas with a conversion kit.
The Ooni Koda 16 is an outdoor pizza oven that is also portable so you can take it anywhere or you can set it on a countertop.
As of the date of this article, the Ooni Koda 16 is priced at $599. This is at the upper end of the portable pizza oven market.
How to Choose an Ooni Pizza Oven
Choosing an Ooni Pizza Oven may sometimes be overwhelming. Particularly when they have all those weird-sounding names. But don’t worry, in this Ooni Koda 16 review we will dive deeply into the ins and outs of the Ooni Koda 16, and why we think is the best portable pizza oven.
The fuel source of your pizza oven will ultimately determine the flavor of the crust. Fuel sources like wood or pellets will significantly impact the result, while gas results in a more bland profile.
The size of the baking surface will determine the size of the pizza you can bake. In the Ooni Koda 16, you can bake up to a 14-15 inch pizza.
The material of your pizza oven is also a significant factor as it affects how easy it is to clean. For example, a stainless steel pizza oven is much more challenging to maintain than the black-coated surface of the Ooni Koda 16.
Since the Koda 16 does not have a chimney, it is much easier to clean than other pizza ovens. All you have to do is clean the stone, which is self-cleaning, and remove any debris from the inside, and that’s it!
The available budget certainly has a significant role in the buying process for any product. You need to determine if what you are getting is worth your price.
What is the Ooni Koda 16?
The Ooni Koda 16 is a gas-powered outdoor pizza oven that is ideal for any home, family, and well… backyard.
This compact pizza oven heats up to 950°F in just 20-min and will give you a stone-baked, restaurant-style pizza in 60 seconds.
The Ooni Koda 16 was first launched in March of 2020 by the married couple Kristian Tapaninaho and Darina Garland.
However, it wasn’t the first pizza oven this duo designed.
Kristian was desperate to design a pizza oven to make fantastic pizza without paying the take-out price.
After much trial and error, hard work, and perseverance, he came up with his first portable wood-fired pizza oven in 2012, constructed straight from his backyard.
The couple decided they needed to share their product with the world and quickly gathered a team of professionals from manufacturing and expanding the Ooni product line, introducing more ovens and accessories to the public.
Unboxing the Ooni Koda 16
The Ooni Koda 16 oven came very well packaged. The pizza stone was packaged in a unique bubble wrap to protect it from breaking during shipping and handling.
What’s in the Box?
- Ooni Koda 16 Pizza Oven
- Ooni Pizza Stone
- Gas Hose
The oven is well-built and looks stylish with its nice black matte finish and silver border.
How to Assemble the Ooni Koda 16
As we hinted earlier in this article, minimal assembly is required for the Ooni Koda 16. This pizza oven comes pretty much complete straight from the box.
Once you open the box and remove the oven, all you have to do is remove the packaging, unfold the legs, and connect the hose to your propane tank; no tools are required.
Yes, it’s that easy.
First Time Set-Up
Setting up the Ooni Koda 16 oven is super easy, and it takes less than 5 minutes. All you have to do is:
- Take it out of the box
- Fold-out the legs
- Place the pizza stone in place
- Hook up the gas tank (not included) to the gas hose.
Note: The Ooni Koda 16 is ready to use with a 10 or 20lb gas tank. If you wish to connect it to a 1lb propane (Camping Gas Tank), you need an adapter. You will need a natural gas conversion kit if you have a natural gas source.
What You Need to Get You Started
There are a couple of simple things you are going to need to get you started using an Ooni Koda 16.
1. Gas Source
Why Do You Need a Gas Fuel Source?
The Ooni Koda 16 is gas-fueled, but the pizza oven does not include a gas tank. Accordingly, you will need a propane tank, you can choose from:
- 1lb propane tank plus the adapter
- 10 or 20lb propane gas tank
- Natural Gas Conversion Kit, if you only have natural gas
2. Pizza Peel
Why You Need a Pizza Peel?
You need a pizza peel to transfer the pizza in and out of the oven. You may also like to have a turning peel to rotate the pizza while it’s cooking.
We recommend using a metal peel because a wood peel may easily burn with the intense heat of the Ooni Koda.
Another consideration is whether to choose a full-metal or a perforated peel. We recommended using a perforated peel because any excess flour will go through the holes of the peel and not into the oven. Any excess flour that gets into the oven will burn immediately.
A perforated peel will make the pizza oven cleaning easier. Less mess, less cleaning!
3. Infrared Thermometer
Why You Need a Thermometer?
You will also need an infrared thermometer to check the temperature of the oven, particularly the temperature of the pizza stone.
Note the pizza stone will have different temperatures depending on how close the flame is.
Failure to use a thermometer can result in a burnt crust or an underbaked crust.
While cooking the pizza you should check how the crust is browning during baking.
Having an infrared thermometer that can read the temperature of the braking surface instantly is going to make the baking process a lot easier.
4. Oven Brush
Why You Need an Oven Brush?
You’ll also need an oven brush to clean the oven after using it. There will be burnt residues on the stone, that you’ll want to clean for future use.
You might also be interested in getting other Ooni accessories for the Ooni Koda 16 such as:
1- Turning Peel
Why You Need a Turning Peel?
In addition to a pizza peel, a turning peel makes it easier to rotate the pizza while baking for an even bake.
Note: Using a turning peel requires practice, but when you become a PRO, it’s going to be easier to rotate the pizza and you’ll get the best results.
2- Cast-Iron Pan
Why You Might Want to Get a Cast-iron Pan?
Besides baking pizza, the Ooni Koda 16 pizza oven can also be used for baking and cooking other foods. The Ooni cast-iron double-sided pan is the perfect addition to cooking steak, chicken, and pork.
Why Do You Need a Cover?
To better protect your Ooni pizza oven from the elements is best if have a cover.
How Does it Work?
This outdoor pizza oven brandishes a large cordierite stone baking stone and an L-shaped flame that cooks the pizza evenly from start to finish.
Once you turn on the propane tank and press the power button, it will only take 20-minutes for the Ooni Koda 16 to reach a whopping 950°F; this is the temperature needed to get that professional pizza taste and crispy crust without overcooking the inside.
What’s even better?
This pizza oven is designed for the great outdoors, giving you a wood-fired pizza oven in your backyard without paying the thousands of dollars traditional options cost.
Note: The Ooni Koda 16 is for Outdoor Use Only
We think temperature control is the most important feature of the Ooni Koda 16.
You get total control of the cooking temperature. If you think 950F is too high of a temperature for your pizza, as it might cook faster on the top than on the bottom, you can lower or increase the temperature with the temperature knob as you desire.
Being able to control temperature is not something you can easily accomplish with any other fuel source.
The burner in the Ooni Koda 16 is shaped in an L form, which means they run down two of the oven’s walls. The rear and left sides of the pizza oven. This allows the oven to heat up faster, as well as bake the pizza more evenly.
The Ooni Koda 16 is the only pizza oven from Ooni that has this feature. For example, the Ooni Koda 12 only has the back portion of the burner.
As you can see in the above illustration, different areas of the pizza stone are at different temperatures as the burner is on. With the help of an infrared thermometer, you can check the difference in temperature and heat distribution.
Accordingly, just like you would do in a wood-fired oven, you must rotate the pizza since it is hotter and closer to the heat source.
However, unlike most other pizza ovens with only back burners, you won’t have to turn the pizza as often.
While pizza is the most popular item to place inside this oven, it isn’t the only one.
You can make fabulous flamed cook fish, steaks, and vegetables, too, quickly controlling the temperature of your cooker with a simple dial.
Baking Pizza in the Ooni Koda 16
At first baking pizza in the Ooni Koda, 16 can be challenging for any pizza baker. The increased temperature and the limited space play a significant role in your success.
To become a PRO baking pizza in your Ooni Koda 16 there are some tricks and tips you can use to bake the perfect pizza.
Some of them are:
- Allow your Ooni Koda 16 to fully come to temperature.
- Keep the Ooni 16 Koda away from wind rafts.
- Rotate your pizza every 15 to 20 seconds.
More on Baking Pizza in an Ooni Koda 16
Here’s a video brought to you by Ooni on How to Cook Pizza with an Ooni Koda 16.
How to Extinguish this Pizza Oven (Shutting it Off)
Turning the Ooni Koda 16 pizza oven off is more straightforward, if not more accessible, than turning it on.
All you have to do is turn the gas knob back to the off position. As long as the gas is fully turned off, there should be no gas leaking from the oven.
What We Like About the Ooni Koda 16 (And What We Don’t)
The Ooni Koda 16 is a great outdoor pizza oven that uses innovative technology and cooking techniques to create a professional-style pizza from your own home.
The Ooni Koda 16 is a durable product with an insulated, powder-coated carbon steel shell, ensuring quality and a safe experience.
We love how quickly this oven cooks a pizza, how crispy the crust is when it comes off the stone, and how versatile the design fits into every household decor.
The stone and oven are easy to clean and use and require little assembly (although it does come with a manual.)
What We Don’t Like about the Ooni Koda 16
While we have little to complain about, there are a few things we didn’t particularly care for when purchasing/using this product.
First, it is much heavier than some other Ooni ovens and other backyard ovens on the market. While it is transportable, there are other options if you plan to take your pizza cooker camping or vacationing.
We were also slightly turned off after finding out that the heat gauge was not included. While you can set this bad boy to 950°F, there is no way to tell it gets that hot unless you purchase a temperature gauge or a thermometer.
The only flaw we have to note about the Ooni Koda 16 is that it does not have a door, like the Ooni Karu 16. A door would allow the pizza stone to retain its heat better.
But the Ooni Karu does have a chimney to allow the pizza oven to extract the excess heat and smoke from the charcoal or wood pellets. A chimney is something that we don’t particularly are fond of, as it needs extra cleaning.
But, why the Ooni Koda 16 does not have a door?
Of course, there is a reason for that, ventilation.
There has to be a way to extract the extreme heat from the inside of the oven, and not having a door solves that problem.
However, since the opening or (mouth) of the Ooni Koda 16 is so big it allows the pizza stone to cool faster particularly if you place the oven near wind rafts or if you live in cold weather.
If the stone is not able to retain the heat due to wind or cold weather, then the pizza crust cooks slower than the top of the pizza, which may result in a soggy bottom or a burnt top.
We found that the solution for this situation is to reduce the temperature of the oven to around 650 to 700F and cook the pizza for an extra minute. Note the decreased flames from the photo on the left to the photo on the right.
We easily managed to control the temperature and Voila! You got yourself the perfect pizza!
Without a gas knob, you are not able to control the temperature as easily as you can with the Ooni Koda 16. Trying to control the temperature in a wood, pellet, or charcoal oven is a real challenge.
But the Ooni Koda 16 makes your life real easy in that sense, which is why we recommend it so much.
Lastly, getting your hands on one of these ovens may be a little tricky because they are so popular that they are sometimes sold out.
Ooni Koda 16 Pros and Cons

- Versatile with a sleek design
- Heavier than other options out there
- It doesn’t come with a thermometer
- No accessories
- No door, pizza stone may not retain heat
- It can be hard to get your hands on

So, what do we think about this product overall?
Look at how we rated the Ooni Koda 16 in the four most important categories for cooking appliances.
The Ooni Koda 16 is extremely easy to set up, and it isn’t hard to figure out how to use it (we pretty much jumped right in.)
However, it takes a little time to figure out how much and when to turn the pizza.
This pizza oven is highly durable and has just about everything you need to start.
It is the perfect size for a family cooker and has plenty of safety precautions to ensure nothing goes wrong when using it properly.
We wish it would have included a thermometer.
The Ooni company makes it easy to get in touch with someone if you are having trouble with your oven. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable, and you will quickly get the help you need.
You can contact them by phone, email, or chat, and they also offer FAQ pages or community pages for quick and easy answers.
There is no denying that the Ooni Koda 16 is a fantastic pizza oven with great features that makes phenomenal pizza.
Unfortunately, it is expensive compared to other comparable pizza ovens (and are a bit lighter).
How Does the Ooni Compare to its Competition
Ooni isn’t the only backyard pizza oven on the market today. They have serious competition, such as the Gozney Roccbox, Bighorn Pizza oven, Bertello, and Mimuo pizza ovens.
Ooni Koda 16 vs Competitors

The Gozney Roccbox
The Gozney Roccbox is another excellent option that comes in multiple colors and provides gas and wood cooking options. Like the Ooni Koda 16, this oven heats up to 950°F in just 60-seconds.
Roccbox, by Gozney, is the portable pizza oven that reaches 932°F to cook a Neapolitan pizza in just 60 seconds.
Gozney developed Roccbox due to customer demand, letting you cook the restaurant way in the comfort of your own backyard. With its growing cult of followers, Roccbox lets you puff up your pizza dough, melt cheese, and crisp the crust like never before.
While it is heavier than the Ooni Koda 16 (at 44lbs) and not as attractive (just in our opinion), it does come with a few accessories, such as a thermometer and peel.
The Bertello pizza oven is much smaller than the Ooni Koda 16, with a 12.5″ wide x 13.5″ deep cooking surface.
While it is cheaper, it doesn’t heat up quite as hot, only reaching 920°F, and if you plan on using gas, you will have to purchase a separate setup.
Mimiuo pizza ovens are smaller than the Ooni Koda 16 but can crank out heat with a temperature range of 300°F and 1000°F.
The creative rotating system drives the pizza stone to rotate automatically during the baking so that the pizza is heated more evenly. Get rid of the tedious work of manually turning the pizza during baking, no more burnt pizza！
Designed for the outdoors and either portable or transportable, take it anywhere and enjoy handmade gourmet Pizza in an Instant.
These ovens will cook a 13inch pizza in just one minute, similar to the other options.
Stoke Stove Gas Pizza Oven
If you are looking for affordability, here’s is another option that compares to the Ooni Koda 15.
The portable pizza oven to complete the backyard of your dreams. Smokeless, restaurant-grade, and designed with a heat-resistant steel shell.
Fire up your oven to 900°F in just 15 minutes, and bake your pizza in just two.
Fire up flame-cooked pizza with Stoke and choose from 13" or 16".
Lifetime Warranty - No one can beat it!
Are Popular Brands Really Worth the Extra Money?
It can be hard to decide if paying the extra hundred dollars is worth it for the same product.
So, is it worth grabbing the brand that is a public favorite, or is the other options just as good?
It’s hard to say whether or not the expensive options are better; it depends on what you are comparing them to; sometimes, you will simply be paying more for the name rather than extra quality.
What to Watch For When Buying a Pizza Oven
When looking for a pizza oven, consider these things instead of the name of the company or the price tag attached.
- Quality material– You want a durable product that will last a long time and is safe to use
- Easy construction: You shouldn’t have to spend a day putting together a portable over
- Excellent Customer Service- Things go wrong; it’s natural. However, it would help if you didn’t have to fight to get in contact with someone.
- Good reviews: No one knows the performance of a product better than those who have already tried it.
- Does what you need: Don’t pay for all the bells and whistles if you don’t want or need them; get what works for you and your family.

This product cooks a fabulous pizza in a short amount of time and is extremely easy to use, clean up, and store away until the pizza craving hits.
While this product may be a little pricier than the other options, it is durable, has a large capacity for more food, and has a sleek and versatile design.
