Some factors come into play as to how long your pizza will take to cook. If you’re going to create the perfect pizza, consider other factors, such as the temperature of the pizza itself and the toppings. 

For example, if you place a frozen pizza into the oven simultaneously as an unfrozen pizza cooks,  you will be sorely disappointed in the half-baked pizza. 

Accordingly, our cooking times and temperatures are based on a pizza set at room temperature with only cheese as a topping.

On the other hand, if you insert a pizza into the oven with layers upon layers of meat and thick vegetables, the pizza’s center will come out cold and doughy. That’s not the kind of pizza you want.

  • When adding toppings to a pizza, remember toppings add weight and moisture to the dough.
  • The toppings should not be more than three at a time.  If adding more than three, add less of each.
  • Vegetables should be pre-cooked before adding them to the pizza, and an additional minute or two should be added to the cooking time.

Bake or Broil Pizza?

The method you should use to cook your pizza—baking or broiling—largely depends on the type of oven you have and the result you desire.

Baking is the most common method for cooking pizza. It involves heating the pizza from all sides and is typically done at a high temperature. In some cases, pizza can be cooked using a combination of both methods. While there will be some variation between different pizza styles and the ovens you use, the average range of temperatures you should be aiming for will be between 450°F and 500°F.

The optimal temperature to cook pizza, particularly for achieving a crispy crust and perfectly melted cheese, is typically between 475 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit (245 to 260 degrees Celsius) for a conventional home oven.

This may not apply if you are one of the few people with a commercial-grade oven in your own home, this may not apply.

Considering that brick ovens and commercial-grade pizza ovens can easily reach 800°F.

As you know, pizza started in Naples with the traditional Neapolitan Pizza.  After the Italians emigrated to the United States, a whole array of pizza styles were, and are still being developed, all based on the Neapolitan Style. 

Today, you can narrow the basic pizza styles to four recipes from which all other pizza styles are derived. For example, Grandma Pizza is a variation of the Sicilian Style.

Although frozen pizza is not what we do, we are also providing a guide for this particular type of pizza style because sometimes frozen pizza is just what is available.

The right temperature is an essential element of pizza, but timing matters most.

The temperature has to be hot enough to completely melt the cheese and for the crust to be well-cooked, but if you leave the pizza in the oven for too long or too little, you don’t enjoy it.

Let’s start with something that we all do. There will come a time when you want to cook a homemade pizza in your standard oven.

Of course, when you cook a homemade pizza, I don’t have a box telling you the temperature or cooking time, so it can be a little intimidating to try and guess how long the pizza will take. 

You might go off the temperature on the boxes of frozen pizzas at the grocery store, but if you want to get specific about your pizza, you will have to go a bit hotter.

If you tend to get anxious about turning your oven up to such a high temperature, there are a few things you can do.

  • You can watch the oven closely to ensure that nothing around it is beginning to smoke.

Frozen pizza is not our thing.  It will never be the same as making your own.  But, No Judgment!  At times frozen pizza is the way to go. 

So, it is okay to look for alternatives if you are starting your pizza-making journey and don’t have the required time or think that making pizza at home is difficult. 

Pizza can still be quite enjoyable when you choose to buy them in its frozen variants; you just have to know the best way to cook them properly, and that is where we come in. 

How to Bake Frozen Pizza

When you purchase a frozen pizza, it will have cooking instructions on the back of the box.

If you don’t have the pizza box available, the best temperature to cook frozen pizza is at 450°F for around 10 to 15 minutes.

While this can produce a pizza you would be happy to eat alongside a glass of wine, if you want to step up your pizza game, you can entirely forgo the instructions on the pizza box.

Additionally, you will want to begin thawing the pizza out, perhaps as you wait for the oven to reach the right temperature.

Cooking a frozen pizza isn’t too different from cooking a homemade pizza, aside from the fact that someone else did all the work of putting the pizza together.

Once the pizza is out of the box and beginning to thaw, you will want to turn your oven up as high as it will go.

This goal is to try and mimic the same environment that a commercial-grade pizza oven or a brick oven can reach. For most standard ovens, the maximum temperature ranges between 500°F and 550°F.

Do you use bake or broil to cook pizza?

To cook pizza, just remember that you should set the oven to bake and not broil.

If you have a pizza stone or feel comfortable using a cast-iron skillet, you can put this in the oven and wait until it reaches the proper temperature.

From experience,  reheating pizza can be troublesome. Sometimes the slices of pizza get too soggy to enjoy, and other times the pizza will get too dry and brittle to savor.

When reheating a pizza, you will not follow the traditional method of turning the oven up as hot as possible. The pizza has already been thoroughly cooked the way you want it.

This time, the goal is to bring it up to a tasty temperature without altering how it feels.

Instead of turning the oven up to 500°F to reheat your pizza, you will want to set the temperature between 350°F and 375°F as your cooking range.

You should always ensure to let the oven fully pre-heat before inserting the pizza into the oven; otherwise, the texture will be ruined.

How to Reheat Pizza

To reheat leftover pizza, preheat the oven temperature between 350°F and 375°F and set it for 8 to 10 minutes.

Before the oven reaches the temperature you need it to be at, you will want to place a piece of foil directly on the rack in the oven. If you wish, you can also line a baking tray with foil and use that.

The goal is to get the foil (or baking tray) as hot as the oven before you set the pizza in. Once the foil has reached the right temperature, you will want to put the pizza in the oven and wait. Typically, this should take somewhere between 8 to 10 minutes.

Say you are having a party and want to serve the pizza piping hot.

However, you do not know when everyone will arrive at the party, so you cannot plan to take the pizza out at a specific time.

Instead, you are tasked with keeping the pizza warm. We know from experience that keeping food warm in the oven is a balancing act.

If the temperature is too high for too long, I’ll overcook the toppings of the pizza. leaving the center cold.

If the temperature is too low, then it is not going to be kept warm enough to keep the pizza too cold out of an abundance of caution.

To keep a pizza warm, you will want to do the opposite of what you do when cooking it.

You will want to turn the oven as low as it goes while maintaining the temperature.

The oven’s lowest temperature for most standard ovens will be between 150°F and 170°F.

A good practice is transferring the pizza to a cooling rack to avoid the crust getting soggy.

Of course, you will put the pizza in once the oven has reached the right temperature, or you leave the pizza in if it has already cooked.

You want to avoid gradually warming it up, which can alter the texture. Once the pizza is in the oven, you will have to wait until it is time to serve it, and you will have a piping hot pizza to serve.

If you remember your middle school science classes, convection is a heating method that utilizes the movement of molecules in fluids and gasses to heat things.

So, does that mean there is a difference when it comes to cooking a pizza? It sure does. The difference is small, but it will be essential not to ruin your pizza and have nothing to eat for the night.

Instead of aiming for 550°F as you would in a standard oven, the best temperature to bake pizza in a convection oven will be closer to 450°F to 500°F.

Pizzas tend to cook faster in these ovens, so going past 500°F would be overkill.

As with other pizzas, you will want to wait until the oven has reached the proper temperature before placing the pizza into the oven.

This process ensures the pizza cooks evenly and quickly. You should generally leave the pizza in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes before taking it out and beginning to slice it up and serve it.

How to Cook Pizza on a Grill

First, you will want to heat your grill to that magical temperature of 500°F.

This temperature has proven to be the best at getting a perfect crust, cheese, and toppings cooked without burning anything. It is also best if you use either a baking stone or steel. 

Once the grill has reached temperature, you will want to place the pizza into the grill and wait approximately five minutes.

Remember to set the pizza on the grill when the grill has reached 500°F, as slowly heating a pizza is not a good idea.

After the first five minutes, you will want to use grilling tongs to rotate the pizza about 180°. This rotation is the equivalent of a half-turn.

Doing this will ensure that the pizza cooks thoroughly, as grills can sometimes favor one side or another, or the weather conditions may affect how it cooks.

Once the pizza has been turned in, you will want to continue cooking it for another five to seven minutes.

This process should equal 10 to 12 minutes spent cooking the pizza. Before you know it, you will have a perfectly cooked pizza you and your family can enjoy outside.

Wood-fired Ovens

Wood-fired ovens, by nature, can reach much hotter temperatures than your traditional and even convection ovens. They are what commercial-grade ovens are designed to reach. 

Typically, for cooking a standard thin pizza, you should wait until your wood-fired oven has reached approximately 800°F.

If you cook a pizza that is a bit thicker and chewier, you should aim to reach around 600°F instead so that you do not accidentally burn the pizza.

With the temperature so hot, you might be worried about the idea of turning the pizza into charcoal. Nobody wants charcoal pizza.

The upside to using an oven that reaches such high temperatures is that you don’t have to cook your pizza for a long time.

In the right conditions, your pizza can be finished in as little as 90 seconds, leaving you with a perfect pizza in minutes.
